Does anybody here build their own soil?

If so, do you have a super minimal guide for someone who does not want to go deep in the rabbit hole. Just wants an easy recipe with no real gear needed? 🙃

I would suggest a soil which includes peat or vermiculite.  

Managing water is one of the challenges for smaller volume container soils.

Thx! Scale is super small. Just some tomatoes in 5 gallon pots and some other stuff in 5 gallon pots. Maybe some a couple cukes  and herbs. But would really like to make it 100% regenerative because why not? :) just don’t have a ton of time to get super nit picky , which I don’t think is necessary anyway :)

Yeah compost is the best and mulch well with straw or pea mulch.

Do you want it for propagating or garden beds? But you can't go past compost.

here’s something simple, equal parts:

- manure/compost mix (nutrients)
- perlite/vermiculite (porosity)
- coco coir/peat moss (water retention)

I've done soil test (thru https://www.loganlabs.com/) then amended based on lab results. If you have the time and a little money to do so it works really well. It'll tell you what nutrients you lack and your soil Ph.

Amending. Kinda just want a stack of fantastic soil that I didn’t buy, but is high quality and full of nutes :)

If you're filling new raised beds then there are good mix recipes that you can find online. If you're amending existing soil (top soil or old beds) then that takes a bit different approach. What are your plans?

Yes. 4 months at the least. Depending on environmental factors. Keep it moist (and warm if possible), aids in decomposition.

Nice! I do have a lot, and I also have an area where I could pile them. Basically just shove them in one place in the fall, let spring come, and 4 months after thaw I’m good to go? I like this it sounds like easy mode.

Eventually I’d like to go full small scale regenerative

Depends on what you have readily available. If you have access to lot of fall leaves, just keep piling them, and you'll get great soil in 4-6 months
