Persepolis was a grand and powerful ancient city, once the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire.
Founded by Darius I in around 518 BC, Persepolis was built on an impressive half-artificial, half-natural terrace in the plains of Marvdasht, Iran.

Fascinating!  Persepolis sounds like an incredible feat of engineering,  built on an artificial terrace.  I wonder what the city was like at its height.
