Sea Otter Week: A Tale of Recovery Welcome to Sea Otter Week, where today, we explore how sea otters reclaimed their coastal homes: Near Extinction: By the early 20th century, sea otters were nearly extinct along the West Coast due to the fur trade. Their populations dwindled to less than 2,000 worldwide Recovery Begins:
Alaska to British Columbia: In the 1960s and 70s, efforts began to repopulate areas. In 1969, 89 sea otters were translocated from Alaska to Vancouver Island, British Columbia. This initiative marked the start of their recovery in Canadian waters. From BC to Oregon: Following the success in BC, in 1970, sea otters from Vancouver Island were moved to the Oregon Coast. A Conservation Milestone: These translocations were pioneering efforts in wildlife conservation, demonstrating that with human intervention, species could be brought back from the brink Tomorrow we’ll talk about why this reintroduction of sea otters is so important to the ecosystem.
