According to Greek mythology, Artemis is the daughter of the head god Zeus and the goddess Leto, and is the twin sister of Apollo. In most accounts, the twins were the result of an extramarital relationship. Because of this, Zeus' wife, the goddess Hera, forbade Leto to give birth anywhere on land. Only the island of Delos provided refuge for Leto, allowing Leto to give birth to his children. As usual, Artemis was the first twin born, who then proceeded to assist Leto in giving birth to his second child, Apollo. Like her younger brother, she is a kourotrophic (child-nurturing) deity, the patroness and protector of young children, especially girls and women, and is believed to bring illness to women. women and children and then help them recover from their illnesses. 7 replies
