Someone new to FC/web3/crypto ‘Hey come and check out this great social media app, it’s got a tipping mechanism and you need to lock up $800 worth of a token to get involved’.

Totally valid concern, IMO -- the way I'm looking at it is there's different level of participation/getting involved, and I don't think tipping other people should be the only way to get involved. So yeah, if you want an allowance and to tip others, there should be a pretty strong barrier to entry to ensure aligned incentives (notably the ones with the allowance now have a strong incentive to ensure they're tipping good actors/behaviors since they have skin in the game). On the flip side, I don't think it should be that much to receive tips, and i think there's also other ways to participate in the ecosystem as well. If you zoom out, people really actually care more about receiving tips. The reason they feel passionately about the allowance is because they think (and perhaps is truth to it, I don't have the data) that bigger allowances equate to receiving bigger tips. :) Fwiw, under the current system, I have a pretty decent-sized allowance, and I'm advocating for a position that would sure lower my allo.
