Interesting question. I guess it depends how you look at it. 

Like today ENS Labs has a stream from ENS DAO (it's primary source of funding) to continue building the protocol (a public good itself) and contributing to the ecosystem - is that value capture or just a healthy relationship? I think the latter

As the treasury inevitably gets bigger with ENS adoption, do you think there's a risk of funding capture along the lines of the EIP-1890 & EIP-2025 discussions in 2019?

(FWIW I don't think there's a risk this happens in the near term)

What do you think about all of the good ENS handles that were registered for 20 years when ETH was really cheap, and are sitting in inactive wallets?

So there’s DAO, DAO Working Groups, and Labs

DAO isn’t an entity, just smart contracts, so not much relationship to be had

WG <> Labs relationship is good! Each can technically operate independently, but we often help each or at least try to stay in sync. WGs are more social, Labs is heavily technical

There's not a super clear path to having renewals and registrations (especially registrations) of 2nd level names (like gregskril.eth) on L2s

Yea that’s a common mistake by devs that we’re trying to educate (fwiw Farcaster’s was intentional, they have their own reasoning)

Many dapps basically have 

if (input.endsWith(“.eth”)) {
  // try to resolve ENS name
}

When really they should treat any dot-separated string as a potential ENS name

How come dapps and such don't seem to integrate with imported dns->ens names by default? I'd always assumed that once it is imported it's in the same registry and treated the same as a standard .eth but that doesn't seem to be the case (e.g Farcaster doesn't support non eth TLD)

For subdomains - anyone can build it! The Labs team doesn't have a demo of a paid subdomain registrar and it's not really a focus, but I know some other teams are working on it like @nxt3d

Any chance of referral fee support in the subdomain registrar, similar to Zora's referral fees? I'd love to make a domain available for paid minting or renting, and allow any front-end that drives a sale to get a share of the cost just by adding their address to the tx data!

Not that I'm aware of - I think that's more relevant for a marketplace like ens.vision vs a manger app like app.ens.domains

As an app developer, what's the best option for providing resolution to my users that's  uncensorable & widely available? My notes so far:

1) eTLD outside of ICANN like .su
2) ipns & web2 gateways (eth.limo)
3) handshake and other esoteric ones
4) onion service
5) .box

hmm I don’t know enough about 1, 3 or 4 to compare these effectively.

2 is more censorship resistant than 5. The gateway can be censored but users always have the option to just use a different gateway

(btw ENS supports all DNS names today, so you can use example.com. But this isn’t really minting a new TLD onchain - the source of truth is DNS)

With an ENS name "<name>.eth" ← is the ".eth" part referred to as the TLD? (analogous to DNS?)

And if so, will there ever be a ".ens" or other TLD's released on the protocol the way DNS started opening up more TLD's over time?
