back in the lab more. casting less. has revealed and made me realise quite a few things about being in-person vs remote - a natural, massive decline in being chronically online - my concentration levels are significantly deeper - less random interactions IRL, but those that do happen are more meaningful mentally, socially, emotionally and produce more serendipity - the time to travel to and from 'work' is really important for thoughts to form and build cognitive architecture - physical proximity to instruments and materials creates a sensory relationship with research that screens simply cannot replicate

I’m spilling the 🫖 on science twitter: Last week, a viral tweet resurrected Thiel's 2019 "lack of talent" take on why biology hasn't met broad expectations for progress. While the exchanges were fire-y, I think the tension points to something deeper and more interesting about the state of modern biology. Here is my take on my blog Life, Edited. https://open.substack.com/pub/editlife/p/bad-math-genes-and-biologys-epistemic

someone recently told me that podcasts are the bandaids put on the loneliness epidemic and I believe them I grew up in a big family and always had this constant sound of life in the background. I later learned about the “quiet” of the city. The terrifying reality of hundreds of thousands of people stacked on top of one another that live in isolation and don’t have deep community. They instead form these pseudo relationships with people on the web, and they fill the silence in their homes with “digital sounds of life” to drown out the quiet. Strange and sad. (For some levity, here is lil gmo with some of that big family. A very “she knew who she was from a young age moment”.)

Dr. Tiffany Vora will be hosting a 1-hour webinar on synthetic biology on March 27th. I saw Dr. Vora on stage at last year’s Singularity University event in Mountain View and she paints a pretty vivid picture of the future of biology.
