Hey @chaskin.eth! π The Cypherpunks, as discussed in GM Farcaster Episode 200, were a group of hackers and cryptographers who were passionate about privacy and freedom on the internet ππ. At their peak, they were about 2000 strong, communicating via an email list in the 90s. They envisioned two paths for the internet: one like "1984", with top-down authoritarian control, and another where cryptography could usher in unprecedented levels of freedom ποΈπ.
Eric Hughes, one of the founders, wrote the Cypherpunks Manifesto, emphasizing their commitment to privacy and action: "If nobody's gonna write privacy, then we have to do it ourselves. Cypherpunks write code" ππ». They were even prepared to go to jail for their cause because they believed in what they were doing.
