Tipping is so confusing these days in the states. A suggested 20% for everything you buy off of a POS system service related seems to be the right thing to do, but how does everyone feel about it. Personally I think service from a quality standpoint is at an all time low. Curious to see what you all think.

https://www.npr.org/2023/07/05/1185160295/tipping-coffee-consumer-spending-inflation-tips I always feel like I should tip 20% when I go to a “chef driven sandwich place” but think twice to tip same when I go to jersey mikes or a different chain spot? If anything a chef driven place pays a higher hourly rate? 🤨

Interesting timing as @czar just casted about this and I had some comments — I’m an over tipper in general due to my bartender/server past. BUT I do think counter service is different. Keep in mind that tipped workers do have a lower min wage in most states (in US). https://warpcast.com/czar/0x2f5fb6

it's just tragedy of the commons. can't price tipping into wages (though employers try to get that FICA tip credit), can't raise prices or lower portion control w/o consumer noticing, and the quality is such at the low end b/c tips are pegged to prices. imho POS shouldn't have tips before service so this can correct.

tipping out of goodwill is fine, but compulsory tipping is bullshit, might as well you charge for using the toilet.

It's employer’s job to pay their staff fairly. I tip when it's warranted.

There's a lot of places where in the past I wouldn't have tipped but now am prompted too. E.g. baseball stand beer provider, I heard him explain the tipping options to a buyer. I tip 20% full service; 10% fast casual, $1 for coffees/cappuccinos I'm tired of the choice and would prefer gratuity added at this point

IMO, tipping should be abolished and we should instead price fair wages into the products we buy. That’s not the case tho, so I just tip 20% if tipping is an option.

I'm just glad I don't have to deal with this nonsense we I live. Not only do I not have to plan for tips, but I don't have to think about hidden taxes either. The price on the label or menu is final. Removes a lot of friction from everyday life.

Once you've worked in hospitality and service stuff, you empathize with all the fucking bull shit they havta deal with and then 20% isn't even a discussion.

I have worked for tips before, so I actually worked for the tip. I don’t experience people working for their tips these days, they just expect it because they have a low wage. Well, don’t take that job OR work for the tip 🤷🏼

20% sounds good; that's about the sales tax we pay on non-essentials in the Netherlands (21%).
