The Manhattan Project cost $12b ($800m at the time), less than half the Merced-to-Bakersfield train currently under construction (which is also taking much longer)

I toured a nuclear silo converted into a museum recently and the tour guide said each silo cost about $12 million at the time. Granted it was in the 60s & 70s, but still seemed incredibly cheap considering the insane engineering & materials required.
