The invention of the bicycle is attributed to German inventor Karl Drais who created a steerable, two-wheeled contraption in 1817 called the Laufenmaschine (German for "running machine"). This early design, also known as a dandy horse, was propelled by th rider pushing their feet on the ground.

35 $DEGEN Historians do agree that Ernest Michaux did invent a bicycle with pedal and rotary cranks in 1861. However, they disagree if Michaux made the very first bike with pedals. Another fallacy in bicycle history is that Leonardo DaVinci sketched a design for a very modern looking bicycle in 1490.
