The U.S. is attempting to speedily repair its relationship with Russia in the hopes of winning Russian support for the task of containing China in the decades to come. Long before the current war, it was taken as an article of faith that any successful effort to contain China would require the cooperation of Russia to help curtail its influence in Eurasia. The problem is that engineering a total split between Moscow and Beijing has become an illusory goal. Even if Russia would gladly pocket some concessions from the U.S., it is not going to do the 180 turn that Washington is currently attempting and become hostile to Beijing. Russia knows that there are fiercely competing centers of influence in DC, and within four years a U.S. administration with diametrically opposite views may come to power. Meanwhile, its ties with China are stable, predictable.

I'm not entirely convinced that's the intention behind the moves to repair relationships with Russia. I think it's simply that people in power see money to be made from Russia.

The money to be made with Russia hinges on them being less friendly with China, as it's a zero sum battle between the US and China for the pieces of the Russian pie.
