I have had a similar thought. After logging all my reading, the vast majority were written in the 20th century. I’ve only read four books that were written in the 19th century (Nietzsche and Goethe), and one from the 18th century (Michael Kohlhaas) … with a massive multi centuries-wide gap going back to Marcus Aurelius.

I really empathize with this wishful thinking, but must say that I believe the idea of “going to space because we rekt the earth” is a very dangerous one. 1. We are so so far away from a non-trivial amount of people being able to reach, let alone survive in space. 2. Hard to imagine we could bootstrap a stable geo system from nothing, when we can’t even sustain the incredible one that was gifted to us. 3. In order for humanity to expand outward into the galaxy, we need to actually increase the number of planets we inhabit and steward, not just burn through one at a time.

this film looks DAMN GOOD in B&W, due in part to cinematographer Douglas Slocombe who cut his teeth shooting noir from the 1940s through the 1970s.

Did you know that Steven Soderberg made a remix of Steven Spielberg's Raiders of The Lost Arc as an exercise in order to study its superb blocking and editing ? He re-colored the film to be monochromatic, removed all sound/dialogue/music, and re-scored it with the music of Trent Reznor.
