It's great to keep on exploring this question of universal love ! Here are a few observations from my meditative experience (25 years, but just scratching the surface) :
- Universal love begins with oneself ! One's own soul, one's own body. It radiates from there. 
- it doesn't imply submission ( Aikido means the path of love energy)
- it makes you understand things in a more detailed way 
- it might be the psychological name of a cosmic force that binds things together 
- it is very pleasant ! Love is the need behind most of our desires, it directs our whole experience of the world, so why not hack the whole system and have it in abundance, immediately ?
- it's hard to maintain all the time though. It needs practice and social culture to support it.
