Need a pair of shoes for my first marathon. I've been running/training on barefoots (Atreyu). Is really the Vaporfly 3 as good as its pricetag?

i’d check out r/RunningShoeGeeks. i’d disagree with others that carbon plated is a no go for first timers. you just need to put in some miles at MP before race day and make sure they work for you that said, going from barefoots to huge stack heights of the VF3 or any other modern super shoe may be the larger issue

While I am not that experienced, I am also training for my first marathon. What I think and I have heard from others is that with running shoes, you need to experiment and find the ones that are the best for you. I have Hoka Clifton 9, and recently bought Hoka Mach X. I find Mach X very comfortable for long runs.

For your first marathon go for a max cushioning shoes. You’ll regret the carbon plate if you are not used to it. Especially for those long distances. Unless your goal for the marathon is sub180, in that case you are on another level and would benefit from the plate.

Vaporflys/Alphaflys (not necessarily version 3) are totally worth it IMO, and you can get great deals on eBay where a lot of stores offload their excess inventory. The Alphaflys seem to last longest and are the best bang for your buck. I wouldn't pay extra for version 3, however.

Atreyu look great—which model are you referring to when you say barefoot?

If it’s your first marathon I would suggest getting something without a carbon plate in it. Vaporflys are designed to make you that 0.1% faster once you have expended every other avenue. It’s. The equivalent of buying a £10,000 full carbon road bike for your first ever race.
