Thank you for the write-up, Sam, super detailed and insightful! If a job is 100% remote, why do so many companies account for the candidate's location in the salary? IMO it shouldn't be a factor at all. I don't deserve a lower salary if I choose to live somewhere with a lower cost of living. What are your thoughts?

Essentially, the person in the LCOL can have a better lifestyle than those in the HCOL. That probably wouldn’t be fair. And asking the person in the HCOL to move is unreasonable. You might appreciate this: https://about.gitlab.com/handbook/total-rewards/compensation/
