It took me nearly two years of gentle persistence to convince Neko to let me photograph him. Despite photographing his girlfriend, Selin, and their child for almost three years, he remained hesitant. I understood the barriers he perceived between us—me being a white foreigner, him being a man unaccustomed to publicly expressing his emotions, and doing so in front of his partner. I recognized how much vulnerability and trust this required from him and approached the process with great care, treating it almost like a form of therapy.
