A masterpiece to me is a work of art that will evoke emotions among a wide array of people, something they can't take their eyes (or ears) off.

this has nothing to do with aesthetics or 'beauty' but with the energy a certain peace emits, what emotional reaction is being triggered.

With a masterpiece, very often it's hard to describe what precisely makes it so good and therein lies the power.

Also it's not a term that one would often use. In the art world there's only a very limited amount of masterpieces, in some genres/art categories maybe more than other.
