The Chernobyl disaster occurred on April 26, 1986 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in northern Ukraine. The incident was the worst civilian disaster in world history and caused the release of radioactive material over large areas of the Soviet Union, parts of Belarus, Ukraine, and the Russian Federation.

During the test, a combination of design flaws and operator error led to a sudden and uncontrolled power surge in Reactor 4, causing a series of explosions and a fire that released a significant amount of radioactive material into the atmosphere.
