Today I left the Democratic party and went back to being a registered independent. Ideally I never would have registered for a party, but in many local elections around here Democrats often run unopposed, so the primary is the deciding vote. Fortunately, as of this month, New Mexico has a semi-open primary system, which means that unaffiliated (Independent) voters can participate in the primary of their choice without formally registering a party affiliation. So if you’re in the same boat as me, and you’re as disappointed as I am in constantly choosing between Option A: Bad and getting worse; and Option B: Inconceivable and also still somehow getting worse (especially on the national level); then maybe it’s worth investigating a similar move where you live to officially register your dissatisfaction with the two-party duopoly and the broader system that is clearly failing to represent the quiet and reasonable middle, which I strongly suspect is the real majority in our country.

Expanding on what Jo had to say here - we've come to focus on our national politics, which are as toxic, divisive and dysfunctional as they've been in a generation or two, if not longer. Meanwhile, a lot of important and impactful work on the local level is being neglected, ignored or not properly acknowledged. It can be easy to despair when your team takes a big loss at the federal level, but the best salve could be simply moving on and getting involved in your neighborhood, school or wherever. You'll probably find people with different points of view can still respect and work with each other. And even if that's not the case, you've a good chance of being able to repair that relationship compared to trying to do so arguing with strangers on the other side of the political divide through social media. Touch grass, shake hands and figure out how to get things built together again. https://www.ouruncertainfuture.com/p/everyday-is-election-day
