Parentcasters — what age / device is best to introduce kids to computers? My nearly 4-year old has mastered an iPad and wants a full keyboard 😅

Contrarian take: keep them away from unsupervised use of Internet-connected tech as long as possible.

Both my kids were on computers at 4 doing Scratch JR. It’s an excellent way to start programming - moving to Scratch and then Javascript

Refreshing to see and read posts like this. My 3yo just got her ipad. My 8yo uses an iPad too, but his school provides them with a laptop.

I started using a Dell for computer games on CD-roms (lol) at 2. I’m not entirely sure when I realized the internet was a thing, but I think it’s important to familiarize kids with desktop and how file system works. - As unbelievable as it sounds, many teens now don’t know how to find stuff on a laptop today.

I have my 2012 MBP reserved for my son as his first computer, maybe when he’s around 5 or 6. he’s only 3 months old so he’s ways away from there.

Around that age we started them with an old janky laptop with lubuntu and a few basic games. Tuxmath was a hit as was bouncy the hungry rabbit

we went first to keyboards for the kid's iPads (you can get cases that make the iPad look just like a laptop) before going to MacBook Airs in 3rd grade (age 8-9)

Get the Smart Keyboard and see if there is some Gen-Z wisdom on why that’s better than a MacBook Air 😇

go for it! Scratch Jr is a great place to start. Anything keyboard specific is slow going until literacy kicks in but they can definitely get the hang of it. Touch screen laptop make it easier to transition from iPad as well.
