helicopter parenting raised a generation of humans who think that they needed someone else to ‘protect’ them 

the world is binary, good or evil, they believe

we externalized kids locus of contol

they hear language or opinions that they disagree with and put it into the ‘evil’ camp along with the person who said it. 

they have been told that feelings are facts.

schools gave them power to topple systems, to fire people they disagreed with, to ban voices on the other side from speaking in a place they were given power over by adults.  

adults gave them power because the mob ruined the lives of their colleagues who opposed them in the past

these young folks are all grown up now

they now have moved on from expecting parents or profs to protect them and now it’s the governments turn

some of them have kids 

the kids use social media and instead of parenting, they blame the government for ‘allowing’ their kids access to content they deem to be damaging 

they avoid personal responsibility, self reflection and instead instill a paralyzing feeling that outside forces control everything 

sad.

what we can do:

confront without cancelling 

assume the best of others 

see where the common ground is

attack the argument not the individual 

be open to the idea that you may be actually be wrong (shock, horror!) 

stop taking and give.

we need to learn to love and give and stop thinking only of ourselves. how can i be in service to others? 

ask not what my country can do for me, ask what you can do for your country 

and that doesn’t mean posting emojis, black boxes or tweets like this one 😂

oh and stop expecting the government to do your job for you. regulate yourself and your kids. you’ve got this 😉

those kids went to schools (like yale) where they needed protection from halloween costumes, lest they be offended

now those kids are adults 

who think the government should regulate to protect them because they don’t trust themselves
