Mainly the voting system, it herds people into two parties. Also Biden is pretty moderate and Trump has 30% locked down, so the politically homeless centrist vote is probably 25% tops. And lots of those are a mix of extreme opinions instead of lots of average opinions, so they'd disagree with the centrist guy a lot.
