because in the US if you have an iPhone 80-90% of your friends probably have an iPhone and itβs default

But that still means 10-20% don't have it! That's still a crazy high number to ignore. Whatsapp is pretty much 100% coverage in so many countries, hard to imaging something being at 80-90% and being such an inconvenience for the others.
