I naively thought that messaging was as simple as using a Ethereum address as a public key and encrypting with your Ethereum private key. But the world has come a long way since Signal, e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_Ratchet_Algorithm

Both WhatsApp and Apple iMessage use a version of this.
