"You should build this feature" "You should make this small quality of life improvement" "You raised a bunch of money why can't you also X" Focus. Not claiming to be world-class at it. Varun is much better at focus than I am—I get distracted by shiny new things all the time. But ultimately you only have a fixed number of "shots on goal" before you lose momentum (and in other cases, funding). Have to constantly be asking yourself is this the highest priority thing we can work on? And if everything is high priority, then you're not focused. Good clip below on what world-class looks like here (note that Jony doesn't think he is good at it).

let me argue a little bit. I absolutely agree with the focus importance on one hand. on the other hand the context is changing significantly (idea-to-market, product cycles, influencers' influence) and it makes reactiveness, relevance to the trends (think Tiktok algos) being a lot more important than before, if not critical – time will show. mb it will lead to a new typical profession – like a person on team who's purpose is the "distraction" – dig into hot trends and explore everything new and how it can be applied to the project immediately to the long term benefit.

This doesn’t sound like focus to me. This sounds like cultivating a craft and a culture

reminds me of a quote i saved a while back: “The word priority came into the English language in the 1400’s. It was singular. It meant the very first or prior thing. It stayed singular for the next 500 years. Only in the 1900s did we pluralize the term and start talking about priorities.”

Honestly, I’m impressed at the number of features that have been added recently. I’m relatively new here but it seems ever week there is some new feature being added.

I liked this piece by Keith Rabois on focus. Had a good mathematical explanation of it (doing a ton of little things worse less than doing 1 big thing). Seems plausible. https://breckyunits.com/insist-on-focus.html

It is great that so many folks want so much added. It's also great that people can build things to add themselves. Seeing social audio get added today, imo, only highlights the magnitude at which things here could take off.

This exact idea is why I think "The Goal" was the most important business book I've ever read. It lays the foundation of the systematic process of figuring out *what* you should be focusing on (within the framework of constraints). If you haven't read it please please read it.

Every new feature means trade-offs elsewhere, even with funding. But your feedback’s noted,we’re listening and iterating carefully.

When it comes to a social media platform though users will want to at least feel the feedback they're providing is being catalogued or possibly slated as a possibility of being worked on in the future (i.e. some form of ownership) Without that projects can risk alienating key parts of their userbase and eventually get attrition/bifurcation - particularly if the project development ends up going -against- what people are asking for. Most of that is just PR/communications though and acknowledging concerns and the like and also making people a part of the conversation in the first place. And generally speaking "fog of war" means what the development team feels may be the highest priority thing isn't necessarily what the (most valuable) users are concerned with.
