(I cast in design because I find the best way to develop taste is to learn about design.)

A framework for taste is the most Silicon Valley thing I've ever heard.

I tried to address this in my book but I didn't even skim the surface (the metaphor I just used is actually the reason why I used Jaws for the illustration) It's not easy, though. One must agree that taste - can be developed - is not entirely subjective Especially the second one is not for everyone

this is true. The first step to acquiring good taste is ingesting massive amounts of information about whatever field you’re looking to master. For a musician this is listening to tons of records, for a painter it’s looking at tons of art. A dilettante or poseur usually has a limited set of information to draw from

counterpoint: good taste is rarely a driver of cultural and technological progress. it’s a lagging, not leading indicator of what’s “good”. new and unusual things are often considered to be in poor taste at the time of their creation

The ability to identify and describe why something is tasteful or not is even more underrated (and rare) of a skill

I don’t have the best taste, I think. But I really admire people who do. I have friends with super strong opinions on music/art/clothing/design and it’s always fun picking their brains about ‘why’. I can ask them endless questions about it.

Buffon essentially expressed this in 5 words in the 18th century: ‘Le style c’est l’homme même’
