Looking for feedback on this iteration for channels The single biggest remaining complaint is people feeling like the pre-existing, large, topic based channels like /food or /founders should be more accesible. It will also reduce work for channel mods who don't want to have to approve every single person who wants to cast in their channel, but are OK giving up some control of who (and they can always invite someone to be a member to guarantee it). Curious: 1. Would you turn this on or off for your channel? 2. Any concerns? https://warpcast.notion.site/Public-mode-11f6a6c0c10180869699c725fa9e02e3

i know its more complex, but since it sorta feels like a legacy hangover/i hate change kind of thing it maybe makes sense to not call them channels at all as you said they're basically big vestigial hashtag aggregators so maybe a lightweight way to handle it is by keeping the frontend looking like a channel, but fill in the info so it's clear that it is NOT a channel, is not actively moderated/community forming, and just make it default public algo mode it gives people the security blanket that it's still there, but also let's you basically wash your hands of it. you could even make it a @ponder poll or something to let people vote on what channels get morphed into this... square? exchange? idk a good name - zombie channel?

I can imagine a channel wanting to do "Public Fridays" or something but stay curated the rest of the week. Seems plausible, but also doesn't feel like a design that will survive in the end. Worth a shot!

As much as this was my issue; live by the sword die by the sword. I’d rather it be the way it is and decentralized and let the market work it out. As for consumers and overall enjoyment of the platform for a lot of people, I think it would be good because people thought of them that way even though maybe they shouldn’t have. Forced still feels against ethos. But if anyone wants to opt in to make it a β€œpublic good” that could be great.

i like it, with the option to bring back the algo feed for these why not have both small/mid sized community channels AND bigger topics based channels they both serve purposes, one is for conversation and one is for discovery also think that channels for events are underutilized rn, they need to be open in order to have bigger impact, thinking about election day in a month

Would probably turn it on for a few channels I don’t actively manage Only concerns would be that it further confuses users about what & where they can post – although I think this can be smoothed over with design

Good goal, but I think you need to pick a default Right now, channels kinda feel all over the place (evidence = the amount of questions you get about them) As a frequent user, I like the public mode design for big "hashtag" channels But for new users, this might lead to more questions / confusion / fatigue (ie. Why is this channel different than that channel?) *** If the goal is protocol growth, seems like your choices are: 1. Default small communities, intertwined by main feed or 2. Default massive broadcast network with ability to join smaller communities if desired Nuanced point, but defaults matter a lot here IMO

Two pain points: I have notifications on for the channel I own, but they get lost in the stream of channel announcements from other channels I'm following or a member of Channel invites also get lost in that stream

as long as this remains a toggleable thing this is great and addresses different operating modes for different channels

those generic channels I don't think are about communities, or at least they haven't been? people were casting into them because it was accessible and everyone can select like /food from the channel list and contribute to the network in some way also do new changes mean that it's all narrowcast right now and only followers see? if not why is it removed now? there are some channels like this castle attack north/south thing where I don't want to bother everyone with or with /lp things that are on the spammy side for those who isn't into it

what if we'd use openrank or smth like that to give permissions for moderating those channels can be complex but also make it weight based, similar to moxie, if 2-3 of the high ranking people want to block/hide spammer then he gets hidden

it would be nice to have the option to send an invite to everyone we follow in one click, much less time consuming

1. Yes, a toggle button for auto membership would be a great help if the channel is made for the general public. 2. The only concern is for example, in /food, if it's not food-related, there should be a filter. 3. To do that, a word should be needed to show your cast to the main feed of the channel, like /itookaphoto. The cast should start with "I took a photo" or "ITAP" This solves everything ig

I want this "channel feed changes from a reverse chronological feed of member casts to an algorithm:" without the public mode.

this opens up being able to spontaneously post, less important for brands like ME but if someone has a great meal and wants to post it in real time in /food , it's too much premeditation to join the channel/get approved first other times i could see unlocked channels be useful is for travel or special events. next week is /bitcoin week and i'm having to think about that now in hopes i get approved in time i've also seen some exclusionary behavior against brands in channels which is frustrating as an intern trying to participate in genuine communities and conversation not just shillamania

For my channels, I don’t think I would but they are pretty niche. That said, I’d love to see this for the broad scope channels providing easy access for newbies as well as for those of us who may not be every day casters in those channels but may want to contribute from time to time (eg /food /art /ethereum /travel etc)

another point is adding content rules for the channel so moderation is more clear, reddit has that and members accept the rules also before joining
