Genuinely curious: what is the “retribution” people are afraid of?

Crickets. Everyone afraid to respond. 🤣😭 Getting sent to the -more replies- or somehow down prioritized in algo. Looks like some PTSD on power badges too. Deserved or not there seems to be a vibe

imo most just don’t want to post anything outside the accepted “builder” tone around here or they won’t be taken as seriously

Retribution isn't the word I'd use, but I certainly like maintaining the greatest optionality possible. If you want to get hired, raise money, hire others, etc keeping a lot of options open means self-censoring on occasion.

it’s just an imagined retribution that prevents people from coming to table with off-consensus takes. when you bring them to the table it’s never as bad as you think it will be. i can tell ya bc it is what i do. politely yell about what i think is wrong, someone else comes and politely yells back. repeat

"praise in public, criticize in private" or whatever the exact saying in is a pretty strong ethos among certain circles on FC. I think its part of why we have a great builder culture here, but it also means that certain more critical forms of discourse feel less natural or more controversial here thats my read - I also think this is way less true now than when I joined, we're seeing more robust public debate about meaningful things - real disagreement hard but important balancing act to foster that discourse without sacrificing good builder vibes

Some missing context: Peoples' sensitive to retribution is not equally distributed. Some people live a relatively carefree life where things just work out for the best. Other people feel like they're constantly fighting uphill and every interaction is a real risk of backsliding. I don't think either one is delusional.

people demonize you, you get your power badge taken away, you get labeled as the angry weird one for a while a lot of people unfollow you because it doesn’t align with the little basic bubbles they’ve blown for themselves you get mods blocking you, get semi banned from channels, people ignore you. fortunately im stubborn, but not everyone is as stubborn as me.

eh fear is not always rational if compared to not casting at all due to said fear, I think superanon is helpful in the sense that it increases conversation liquidity on the protocol downside being that had they posted from their own account, they would get the distribution themselves, hopefully they'll learn that over time

Crypto is a small world, founders need to raise and there are many angels and VCs on Farcaster. If you share a controversial take and someone takes it too personally, they might make your life harder.

Ive never posted there so can’t speak from that perspective. But from the perspective of my life pre-Farcaster & Twitter, fear of our own projection is the biggest retribution. I used to think people gave a fuck what I posted on the Internet, then I realized no one had time for what I posted, then I gained a following, then I realized it was never retribution, I was just scared. Some of the unfollows hurt but people need to optimize for themselves.

Losing favor with the farcaster elite, feels -EV to post off-consensus takes on here, particularly if they’re critical of FC

an example of Farcaster e-gaslighting: months ago, i noticed a specific channel started hiding my content. what was content? videos i pre-recorded all of which were popular with gen-z and women. i called the mods out and they essentially told me “no we aren’t doing that, and who do you think you are to speak up” i ended up boycotting that channel. months later i received an apology and it was confirmed that they assumed i was a “spam bot” and were in fact hiding my content. content that was made with effort. most people one here are ostracizing gatekeeping mean people
