Absolutely. I think it's always about insecurity too. People feel threatened and strike first to avoid getting hurt. Therapy is the solution for that, but unfortunately, many still see it as taboo. Plus, it's super expensive and inaccessible for a lot of people.

I’ve come to the belief that all negativity comes from insecurity. Almost all the “bullying” type behavior I witnessed as a parent seemed so obviously that it came from the bully’s own insecurity. Then I started to ask myself why would it be different as adults? Once I started seeing it this way, it just becomes hard to find any logical reason to dunk on anyone, about anything. And now when I see someone dunk on someone else, I just feel sorry for them and want to give them a hug and tell they are enough lol

If that line of thinking is correct, why try anything new? Surely you can find something wrong with at the scale limit.

a) there is such a thing as an inclusive sense of harm in a negative npv sense, including groups you might feel a concern for. This is a force for good.

b) a justified sense that startups trying something new that succeed will turn into asshole corps with >50% chance (notice people trying new art or science don’t attract as much or any dunking) 

c) if you really believe you’re making omelets without cracking some eggs and all dunking is just envy and ressentiment you haven’t thought your business model through.

Some definitely comes from insecurity (as others said), but IMO the other half comes from overfitting from expertise.

Common HN commentator: someone Very Smart thinks new thing is dumb or obviously a scam. Anything crypto-related for example, like the Classic Smart Finance Person, or the Classic Smart Distributed Systems Person. Anything cryptography-related was another classic example that predates crypto, Classic Smart Cryptographer is very upset that someone dares attempt to improve on usability of Very Serious encryption workflow.

I know all the psychological reasons that people do it, but it still just makes no sense to me that they do it.  It's just such a waste of energy that they could be using to try something new themselves.
