A good illustration of why the problem of filtering out "spam" is challenging. Most of these accounts are not spam. They are uninteresting to this particular person. One person's spam is another person's friend. It's a relative definition. If you don’t follow these users, even with the power badge, low likelihood you’ll see them. And if they are really offensive, just mute.

Once I added the user names it became very apparent that this method was very very subjective. This list highlighted amazing builders and brands like @deployer who’s floaties are the coolest tech I’ve seen in ages, @cybershakti who is helping every person one click mint NFTs with her app @poster, and @perl built by @ace which brings a ton of fun to the platform. Maybe these aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but spammers, that’s a label I just cannot accept at all.

Agree. global spam is subjective. personalized/for you based graphs for each user are computationally expensive but can create better feeds and prevent a global level shadow ban.

I woke up to find myself on the list and the whole thread has been a fascinating read this morning. My take is that it’s wholly subjective. One man’s “spam” is another man’s “culture”. Ultimately EVERYONE on social media is engagement farming to some extent. I personally think this is where Farcaster has the edge with channels. The solution for me is providing users the option to mute specific channels and then allowing specific channels to set their own rules. I’m not a fan of silencing people in society just because we don’t like what they have to say. It should be the listeners’ choice who they listen to.

Thank you for this. When I looked at the list, I saw a lot of names that the vast majority here would not consider spammers. Spamming is very subjective. I made this list. I do a ton of work making Drakula videos for the benefit of artists & musicians, none of it compensated (other than getting a small portion of the Base grant on some weeks). I guess it gets recasted a lot? Is that bad? My casts and videos may not be everyone’s jam. I do it purely as a public good and get gratification seeing artists and musicians get some additional exposure. My day job is running a tech company. I guess if I’m going to be labeled as a spammer, I should spam more about that than culture…sure would pay more. 🤣

Can't he just press the mute button??? Lmeow. I'd say all of these are part of the social ecosystem. Quality caster Spammer Buildor Even bots. If you want your feed to be clean. "Free of spam" as you like, then just mute user, you consider spam!! "Your spammer is not everyone's spammer"

Prolly a combo of data + personal. There's a type of spam that's common to everyone: low quality (untrained) bots. The ones they also can't eradicate on X. The most annoying ones, they're ramping up on FC too. And there's the preference(s) choice. Can't call it spam, it's content not interesting for the user. There's a MUTE button (not practical), but a feature with lists would help a lot, or custom / user-defined feeds. Hoping for the best here, not for the traditional "build your own" 😅 But the most annoying (based on personal experience and gut feeling) is the one from bots. I think ppl are exhausted by the amount of bot spam they're seeing without the Priority Mode. It's truly gruesome. But with Priority we've missed a ton of frens replies, curious if there's any improvement here. There's a lotta room for improvement (in time).

Exactly - one person’s spam is another person’s friend according to you so tell me what the point of the PB is exactly? The way you have it set up your platform will never grow. Anyone without it is shadow banned…those with it really mostly use it to farm engagement to increase degen allocation and in turn degen tips

To me the bot or not feature is super helpful to determine whether or not I should mute a caster. Most bots I can ignore, but when half of my replies are just bots, it's good to know if it's human or not so I can mute accordingly. It would me nice to have an action tool that just mass mutes all potential bots.
