1/ People seem increasingly concerned about the term "daily active users" (DAU). It's used by other web2 social networks (in SEC filings!) and now other decentralized social networks; we use Meta's definition (below). Is there likely a better definition? Yes! Have we come up with a better methodology? Not yet.

2/ Farcaster social graph is permissionless, anyone is able to come up with an alternative, better metric. You might even convince everyone else on Farcaster to use it! However, the casual observer on Twitter that sees a DAU comparison between various networks won't care about the nuance.

starting from a baseline of something meta defined and leaving it as is does not inspire much faith

Idea 👉🏻 Community Engagement Index (CEI) may provide a meaningful gauge of activity and engagement on Farcaster. We can calculate the individual CEI for each user based on activities and weightage on each component. These scores can be aggregated for platform CEI. Tracked over time, CEI is able to show trends.

It's interesting how they count people using Messenger as you can use Messenger without visiting the main Facebook.

This means that there is more freedom of action in Farcaster, and if anyone finds a newer project or channel, they are free to even encourage others to do so. Is this possible in other places or not?
