ELIZA, created in 1966 by Joseph Weizenbaum at MIT, was groundbreaking as the first chatbot. By mirroring users' statements as questions in the style of Rogerian therapy, it created compelling conversations that felt surprisingly human. The 'ELIZA effect' emerged when users formed emotional bonds with the program despite knowing it was just pattern-matching software. This phenomenon highlighted how humans readily attribute understanding and empathy to AI systems.
