Often I think when we Interpret art -- it doesn't tell others about what the art itself is about (even though we often think so) -- rather, it tells others about who you are

I think about this a lot. It reminds me of Roland Barthes concepts related to stadium and puncture in photography from Camera Lucida.

Studium
The cultural, linguistic, and political interpretation of a photograph, and the general approach to it. It's the factor that initially draws the viewer to the photograph, and it's based on the photographer's intention. 

Punctum
A specific detail in a photograph that provokes a deep and personal reaction in the viewer. It's a sensory, subjective effect that's not intentionally put there by the photographer. The punctum can be an incidental but poignant detail that "pierces" or "pricks" a particular viewer.
