After high school, my five year plan was to become a great programmer and to be able to build applications. Did that. After college, my five year plan was to become a startup founder. Kinda did that but not as a founder role, rather as an employee first-hire. I’ve learned that a startup can mean many things; could be a company with low head count that has existed for 5+ years or a VC-backed idea. Now that was 5 years ago, I have to recalibrate my goals. I have decided my next five year plan is to be a key player in an efficient business. Feels like a demotion but it doesn’t have to be. I’ve learned it takes a flexible team with balanced skillsets to accomplish that and doing it alone is lonely and improbably unrealistic. I still see myself as a glue guy and great team player, thats why I added the key player part. Efficient business means sustainably generating revenue for a product people are willing to pay for. How that plays out? We will see.

I have the same 5 year goal, but currently struggling to convince my employer of the value of that goal. I’m reading a book called “Pretty Good House” which is actually written by a couple of architects and builders up your way and offers a lot of wisdom for what makes homes healthy and economical. Before I bought it, I came across of review that I think also sums up the mentality and problem of working in this field: “Like all Americans, they are swimming in a sea of contradictions—designing and building fine homes for a small slice of the planet’s population as our world keeps getting warmer.” Maybe my 5 year goal should just be to align my goals with my actions and optimize for clarity.

Do you know https://80000hours.org? It had a huge positive impact on my career. It's essentially a guide for how to have a large impact through one's work. Impact here is in the altruistic make-the-world-better sense. One key takeaway for me: I can plausibly achieve much more than I would have thought possible.
