I spent 3 years working in nonprofit tech as an individual contributor. Nonprofits in the US are protected by freedom of speech, so not all are created equal, and hate groups often have legitimate nonprofit organizations.
One time, a less than ideal nonprofit partner signed a contract for a national feature. The contract wasn't huge, less than a single engineer's salary, in fact. That nonprofit actively campaigned against LGBTQ+ rights, and at the time the pride erg made up almost half the company.
Since that decision, the company has failed to raise funding, performed 2 rounds of layoffs, lost partners, and lost good engineers. A lack of a unified vision of who they were building for and why led to attrition. The company had product market fit but didn't have any clue how they were going to use that to make an impact in the world.
They say about people "you gotta stand for something or you'll die for nothing" and I think a similar rule applies to products. Build the progress you wish to see in the world. 0 reply
