how much of the global progress a la pinker we’ve made has come from explicitly setting out to achieve those goals vs downstream of capitalism

no intended to be an accurate metaphor just a question that non teleological action might be more effective isn’t on its face bad logic to me

this isn't one individual though, this is a society made of individuals

one individual wants to use their fortune to pursue mars for their own motivations
a collection of other individuals wants to say hey why should you have such a fortune if you made it as a product of all of us, there are more pressing problems that apply to all of us that we want the money to be spent on

I’m too left curve to understand most of that 

But iiuc, doing good things for misguided reasons usually bites you in the butt down the road — there is a loss that comes from shattered expectations

I don’t think you can separate reason from action. That’s why some spiritual texts (eg. The Gita) speak of “right action”
