Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that primarily affects the upper and lower respiratory tract. It was first identified in 2001 and is part of the Paramyxoviridae family. HMPV is a common cause of respiratory infections, especially in children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms range from mild, such as cough, runny nose, and fever, to severe cases leading to bronchitis or pneumonia. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets, direct contact, or contaminated surfaces. Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine, with management focused on supportive care to relieve symptoms.
