Lazy caster: does anyone have any recommended reading on INTRANETS? I am interested in the idea that a community could run its own private version of the Internet, just for them

Check out dweb camp if you haven't. Every year they get together in the woods and set up a new private Internet using the latest in decentralized tech. Unfortunately they do it during DEFCON so I've never been, but friends have and said it was a blast. https://dwebcamp.org
