What is art?

This is a question I’ve been thinking about a lot recently. Why is important, and why do we care? 

I’m not a pessimist, like Rousseau: he talks about societies that develop the arts and sciences leads to corruption and moral degradation; when we can really just survive on the bare necessities, right?

I think it’s important because what we call the human experience is not ever fully defined or finite. And the only way to explore our ongoing evolutions and changes and altered states is by pushing our intellectual and physical stimuli. Art does that in a way nothing else can. And so we don’t stagnate.
