Moxiesplaining Journal Day 3: Rethinking Narratives Observing Moxie Fan Token value flows is prompting me to rethink the mental models of “supporting creators” and “monetizing an audience.” Fan Tokens don’t fit charity or patronage models. Buyers aren’t donating or becoming patrons. Big Moxie rewards earners who don’t yet have Fan Tokens get nudged to launch them, because benefits can flow to their followers and the FC network when they do. Holding Fan Tokens isn’t a loyalty test, either. It’s OK to sell; it's necessary to realize gains. It’s part of the mechanism design. Creators receive a 2.5% fee from every sale. They also benefit from holding other entities’ Fan Tokens. So how much of buying/selling Fan Tokens is motivated by altruism, and how much by self-interest? It's not obvious. Perhaps that's the point. --------- (ICYMI: Moxiesplaining Journal is a daily window into my observations, learnings, and “the view of Moxie from where I sit” as a writer + editor).

Note: Moxiesplaining Journal is a 30-day experiment. I'm collecting all the entries in my @paragraph newsletter each day as I go, so the whole collection will appear in blog post form eventually. https://paragraph.xyz/@danicaswanson

Someone sold just ONE of my FTs recently and I noticed I didn't get anything from it. Maybe it was too small? But I did receive moxie from previous sales a while ago. Someone received 14 moxie that I can see on the transaction, but it's wasn't me. The sale transaction does show on my wallet though.

I wonder how it might shift if top fan tokens get a lot of likes for subpar content just because people think they need to support their token? On the other hand there will always be new and interesting people to look out for and chasing the next killer content provider could be what keeps Moxie interesting. I for one love buying Fan Tokens to support, out of belief the price will rise and because I love spending Moxie just for the hell of it.

There is no such thing as pure altruism or pure self-interest. Moxie and fan tokens are at this interesting balance point where my self-interest can benefit another, in both directions. It's in my self-interest to make money - Moxie being one form of that - and in so doing, that benefits my Fan Token holders. It's in my fans self-interest to do those things that make their held Fan Token values rise - engage with the creators whose Fan Tokens they hold. It encourages the building of communities who engage together and build each other up. Selling will, naturally, drop the value of a Fan Token for a bit, but a dedicated creator can easily make up for that through consistently creating content and engaging with their Fan communities - both for their own Fan Token, and those of the creators whose Fan Tokens they hold.
