Long form explanation of my sentiment around value extraction: https://paragraph.xyz/@trigs/mass-monetizing-social-media tagging in @danicaswanson and @abundance, as we've discussed the topics I address in here in great detail. Inspired by @macbudkowski and the /kiwi-news contest for Farcaster 2026.

Insightful and beautifully written. I agree with the comment from @abundance 100% and have (reluctantly) come to similar conclusions. In financial systems that reward extraction, externalize costs, and penalize value creation, there are few if any satisfactory monetization models for content-driven and open source communities, period. It’s all hostile value capture, all the way down. As you wrote: “the people building the value-driven products aren't the ones winning in this scenario, ever, so the real products that actually serve people's needs don't get built.” In crypto we have programmable money legos, which I think *can* get us where we want to go. But it’s on us to build what we need, and that’s not easy to do. Glad we have people like Mike in this space. (1/2)

(continued) I’m stewarding a content-driven community myself, with ambitions that closely resemble what you describe in your piece. It’s a slow-paced group that deliberately optimizes for depth, not breadth. So monetization — including creator compensation, which is surprisingly complex as you say — is our biggest roadblock, because it’s clear to me that none of the options currently on offer will be sustainable long-term. Heartbreaking to watch “old-school” discussion forums and blogs get crowded out and and go dormant with the rise of algo-driven social media. Anyway, I’ll be returning to read this one several times. Great work! (2/2)
