Carrier pigeons were immune to spam because you had to give someone a pigeon to enable them to message you.

Aren’t all casts public by default? Wouldn’t this make it hard to implement a carrier pigeon client on top of the fc protocol? I guess you could just post encrypted blobs to the pubs, but that seems pretty high traffic for the problem at hand.

I was making a pigeon joke, but if we are serious for a moment, I think this is doable with a simple "only show me replies from people i follow" rule.

I don’t mean to pick on fc, this is a bit of a norm. I’m planting seeds here, so I would rather people be able to appreciate the actual protocol topologies at play.
