Shrek is a 2001 American computer-animated comedy based on the legendary picture book of the same name written by William Steig.
The rights to Stig's book were bought by Steven Spielberg in 1991. He originally intended to produce a traditional animated film based on the book, but John H. Williams convinced him to bring the film to the newly formed DreamWorks. Jeffrey Katzenberg began active development of the film immediately after purchasing the studio rights from Spielberg.
