my expectation would be that the easier it is to compete (eg open sourcing), the less “true” competition there will be. leads to way more tiny clients, leads to commoditization, leads to fewer that can rise above the pack.

Closed source software will still be copied, it’ll just be copied by fewer people (the ones with the funding to reverse engineer and rebuild the product).

OSS will be copied by more people, which makes the software itself a commodity. The real value becomes the mindshare of being the original codebase everyone forks.
