Dates are the edible fruit of some date palm species, especially the palmate date (Phoenix dactylifera). Since ancient times, it has been used by humans as a highly valuable food product. They are usually sold as dried fruits. The most popular varieties of date palms - "deglet noor" and "medjool" - are cultivated on an industrial scale in countries with hot climates.
