When I'm painting, I often try to tell a story. In this case, with the theme "Hide and Seek," I tried to imagine how a bunch of kids would be hiding in an attic. What would the attic look like? Probably very crowded with belongings. What belongings would go there? Probably things the owners wouldn't want in the main house. There's a old claw-foot table, decorative chair with ornate carvings, an IKEA lamp from their son's college days, a cactus sculpture that doesn't fit the current decor. I also tried to think about how those hiding would use the materials available to them. There would probably be a lot of sheets covering things so, let's use those. There would probably be a lot of boxes and units to hide behind, so let's show kids hiding behind those. Lastly, I try to inject some humor. The eyes all tell a story. Who's there? What are you doing? The cat is surprised to see someone joining them in their normal hangout spot. These are some ideas I just thought of while drawing this piece.
