Island of the Dolls
In the early 1950s, the only inhabitant of the island was Julian Santana Barrero, who was engaged in growing vegetables, flowers and fishing; he was forced to settle on the island after being expelled from Barrio de la Asuncion for preaching religious superstitions. According to legend, in 1950 (or 1951) a girl (or girl) drowned in the waters of the canal near the lake; Santana allegedly heard her screams and hurried to help, but did not have time to do this and found only a doll in the water, presumably belonging to her, which he hung on the branches of a tree as a tribute to the memory of the drowned woman. Subsequently, according to his own stories, he began to constantly hear screams, moans and footsteps at night: as if the ghost of a drowned girl was crying and asking him to give her new dolls. Over the next 50 or so years, Santana obtained dolls in various ways and hung them on the trees of the island in order to “pacify” the ghost. In total, he collected almost 1000 dolls. 0 reply
