08-24-2024 🤖 We know that AI is going to affect jobs and the economy. There’s going to be second order effects that people haven’t fully realized yet. For example, it’s pretty recognized that truck drivers will be out of work soon with autonomous vehicles. However, what people haven’t considered is how this will affect other jobs surrounding truck drivers like rest stops and motels. Those workers will also lose their jobs and need to be reskilled. In the Midwest there are whole communities built around these rest stops and they will need to be reoriented. These knock on effects haven’t been measured as far as I know.

@coolestak
maybe we’ll see charging stations or battery swap places popping up instead. And I know it sounds a bit dystopian, but what if local towns start jacking up tolls for AI vehicles to make up for the lost revenue? They could even build special roads just for these cars to zip through at crazy speeds, charging a premium for it. We’re already seeing tolls going up in some places, so it’s not that far-fetched.
