idk if it's b/c bags or ideology, but if they didn't contribute in many ways, i think solana et al would give eth an even harder time

agree, but I also think it's incentive alignment

L2s allow orgs to tap into Ethereum culture/users/assets while owning the ecosystem they build

This can't really be done on Solana while they reject modular scaling, I suppose they could have gone the Binance alt L1 route but I probably wouldn't have used it much compared to how much I use base (not that I matter but I don't think I'm alone there)
